Summary edit

Description
English: The Gate Inn and old village pump Scleddau is little more than a hamlet, named for its location close to the infant western branch of the Afon/River Cleddau. Now cars flash through unimpeded on the A40 but formerly, when it was a turnpike road, this was the site of one of the infamous tollgates which were the focus of the 1840's Rebecca Rioters: angry local men in drag who tore down the gates in protest at the extortionate fees levied on them as they went to and fro about their daily business. Hence the name of the pub.
