Summary
editDescriptionThe Gleannan - geograph.org.uk - 963420.jpg |
English: The Gleannan A sign board and picnic table near the Braes road.
The information on the sign poses more questions than it answers. I believe Mhairi Mhor to be a Skye-born 19th century songwriter. As to the 'settlement' - I believe this is NOT the bronze age hut circles marked on the OS maps. The information board reads - "The Gleannan The Gleannan became part of the Penifiler Common Grazings in the early 1900s and was little used except for grazing cattle. In the 1960s it was fenced and a Sheepstock Club wintered hoggs there until the present woodland was planted in 2001. It was decided at this time that the path that Mhairi Mhor had trod should be retained and maintained as part of our cultural heritage and for no work to be done on it apart from strimming the grass, the brushwood and filling in damp spots much as the crofters did in the 1870s. The path is an easy ten minute stroll on a gentle incline to where the settlement once was. The Woodland Thanks to the Forestry Commission, not only for their funding, but also their professional input the township has been able to plant this woodland. Again the township were fortunate in having a local man, Carel Goodheir, who undertook the contract for planting some 40,000 trees of 18 indigenous species. Some grassed areas primarily in the southeast corner have been cut and the hay removed to allow wild flowers the opportunity to flourish. The species of trees are: Birch, Rowan, Scots Pine, Hazel, Alder, Ash, Whitebeam, Sallows, Goat Willow, Oak, Aspen, Elm, Holly, Bird Cherry, Hawthorn, Juniper, Elder and Dog Rose. The Car Park The car park was also constructed by local labour with a grant from Scottish Natural heritage. Funding was also received from this body for the path, picnic benches and this sign." The remainder of the information relates to the plants, animals and birds that a visitor is likely to see. |
