Description
English: The Grantham Canal at Bassingfield. Taken from bridge number 9. This canal was opened in 1797 primarily to transport coal but also to carry "night soil". The canal starts near Trent Bridge and is 33 miles long rising 140 feet up to Grantham through 18 wide locks. It closed in 1936. Many of the bridges have been flattened with the water passing through concrete pipes, bridge no. 9 included: see 747746. Grantham Canal web site: http://www.granthamcanal.com/index.htm
