Description

This graffiti tree has quite a storied history on the Queen West strip, at Queen at Peter Sts. Originally it was simply a stump from a tree similar to the ones in the background, that had died. Before long local street artists began to paint the stump with various themes and messages, and soon the tree became a favoured local landmark.

One night, the stump was found laying on the side walk, knocked over by a car it was thought. The stump had to be taken away, and the sidewalk where it was located filled in.

Luckily, however, the original Hug Me Tree has returned - fully waterproofed, and attached to a heavy metal plate for stability. It seems a gallery and a group of volunteers had picked up and rescued the stump and worked to restore it to its former glory. While it may not be everyone's idea of fine art, everyone has to admit that it's one of the most unique, community-driven landmarks in Toronto.
