Christian leaders must emphasize theuniversal elements of religion, and keep international-ism beside patriotism as the inspiration to sacrifice.The church must do more than bring to the dead anddying the peace of God and minister comfort in thehomes of the bereaved. The spirit of universal brother-hood must not be allowed to die. The ministry of human,social reconciliation must not become an empty name.Forgiveness of ones enemies must receive more effectiverecognition in group as well as individual conduct.Christian leaders must resist the subtle temptation toreduce the God of universal justice, righteousness andgood-will, the Eternal Father of all men, to the God ofa nation, a people, a party, or a clan. We must stronglyoppose this reversion to that worship of a tribal Godwhich we have witnessed across the sea and have justlyscorned because of its assumptions and its blasphemy.
