Summary edit

Description
English: The Italian Chapel This remarkable building on Lamb Holm was built by the Italian prisoners of war who were brought here to build the Churchill Barriers. In fact, the chapel was not completed before the prisoners were removed but nevertheless it has been preserved and maintained by Orkney people and is pretty much as intended by its builders. Essentially the building is two nissen huts bolted together with this ornate frontage - and a beautifully finished interior. It is recorded that at one point the prisoners refused to work on the barriers claiming that this was military work (which they were not required to do under the Geneva convention), but the British government successfully argued that the barriers would give better access to the Orkney mainland for the inhabitants of the southern isles - a role which they continue to fulfil today.
