Description
English: The Muristan, view from the south-east. Photograph by H. H. Kitchener, 1874, for the Palestine Exploration Fund. The buildings of the Hospitaller complex continued to house pilgrims through the 16th century, although the buildings were not maintained and they fell into ruin. In the 16th century the Sultan quarried the buildings to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and in the 19th century dressed stones from the Muristan were re-used to build the Church of the Redeemer. This photo records the appearance of what appears to be the kitchens of the complex (tinted red). Beyond is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, tinted blue.
