Summary edit

Description
English: The Long Groyne, Hengistbury Head This is a long stone groyne, as the name suggests. In Victorian times, the beaches near here were littered with large iron-rich boulders called 'doggers'. The Victorians used a lot of iron, and huge numbers of these were taken away for smelting. Unfortunately, they were the one thing protecting the beaches from erosion, and when they had gone, the beach rapidly started to follow. This was counteracted by building hundreds of wooden groynes along the beaches, and the stone Long Groyne which was completed in the 1930s.
