.Yet wretched mounds and ditches like this have even inthe last two years sufficed to protect towns from regulararmies of brigands. The capital of Hei-lung-chiang andNorthern Manchuria is Tsi-tsi-har, or Pu-kuei, on theriver Nonni. It also is surrounded by a mere mud walk The following are the chief military stations on thenorthern frontier: Hulan-Perh and Aigun; on the east,San-sing, Ninguta, and Hun-chun; on the south, Feng-huang-cheng, Chin-chou-ting, Port Arthur (Lusluin-kou), Yingtzii, Chin-chou-fu, and Shan-hai-kuan. Theprincipal port is Yingtzu. The chief commercial townin the interior is K;uan-ch4eng-tzu. Towns in Manchuria are almost always laid out as inAmerica, on a regular plan. The main street runs duenorth and south, and the second best crosses it at rightangles, while parallel to these run a series of alleys ofgreater or less dimensions, according to the importanceof the place. But so anxious are new comers to locatethemselves in the high street, that it is not uncommon

The houses are all one-storied, the better class constructed of gray brick, facedand corniced with slabs and tiles of the same material,which admit of being carved into elaborate and delicatedesigns. These tiles last extremely well, and suffernothing from exposure. Most buildings are designedafter one stiff common-place rectangular pattern, witha slight attempt at ornament in the high-pitched roofs,the topmost ridge of which tails off at the end into anupward curve, somewhat like the prow of a gondola.The general outline and peculiar roof suggest a canvastent as the primary motif\ though there is no furtherproof than this likeness of origin.
