Description
English: The M5 bridge over the River Avon This bridge carries the M5 over the Warwickshire Avon. At this point the river forms the county boundary between Gloucestershire and Worcestershire on the other side of the river. In fact the parish of Twyning is a peninsula of Gloucestershire surrounded by Worcestershire on three sides, this is likely to be due to the fact that much of the land in Twyning in medieval times belonged to Winchcombe Abbey. When travelling south on the M5, Gloucestershire is first entered immediately after passing junction 8 (the M50 junction), after a mile this bridge is crossed and the driver returns to Worcestershire and then Gloucestershire is re-entered again about another mile further on where a sign welcomes the driver to the county. This picture was taken just after the summer flood of July 2007.
