| Description |
English: The Monk Wall Part of the Monk Wall in Hartwith cum Winsley parish. There are several sections of the wall still remaining, though no doubt rebuilt several times over the centuries. In general the wall is higher, wider and made of larger stones and boulders [known as 'orthostats'] than the other walls nearby. The wall encloses a large area of countryside to the SW of Fountains Abbey and at one time marked the boundary of the abbots hunting ground. There was both farming and coppicing organised by the abbey within the wall. |
