Summary
editDescriptionThe Old Gorton Monastery on Gorton Lane - geograph.org.uk - 4702.jpg |
English: The Old Gorton Monastery on Gorton Lane. In the 1970s, w:Ernest Trevor Spashett RIBA was asked by Father Anselm to redesign the buildings above and adjoining the cloister to improve accommodation for the Franciscan monks living there. Spashett also designed a reflective gold glass cross above the entrance beside the cloister; the shape of the cross relates to the history of the Franciscan order. In certain light situations the cross would reflect its shape on the adjoining roadway. The above image shows the cross after the fire and before its demolition. Spashett designed the iron gate to the cloister, and the lettering thereon (source: archives of the architect). All work by Spashett visible from the outside was destroyed by fire apart from the gate, but internally the redesign of the monks' cells can still be seen today.
