Description
English: The Piste Basher It may look like a little girl being towed on a sledge, but Izzy is doing a very important job. By being dragged along this footpath, she is preparing the loipe(*) to ease the progress of a large group of nordic skiers following along behind in the soft snow on the way back down to Dalton.
  • Loipe - most web definitions merely say "A marked trail for Nordic skiers", but in most ski resorts the trail is not merely marked, but has a pair of grooves cut by a template towed behind a piste basher (which also packs down the snow). This means that fast nordic skiers with skis designed for tracks (rather than touring ones with sidecut and edges to cope with "wild" snow) can power along without bothering to do much steering. Of course, really fast nordic skiers use skating steps, which cut the loipe up, to the great annoyance of those who were relying on the "tram rails" to ski along. From the touring skiers' perspective, the great benefit of a loipe is that the snow is already compressed, and there is no great effort involved in "breaking trail".
