Summary edit
DescriptionThe Plough - geograph.org.uk - 1629515.jpg |
English: The Plough Built as a coaching inn in the late 18th century to take advantage of the growth in travellers between London and Brighton. The original coaching route went up Church Lane to the right and the inn was able to take advantage of a new coaching route added in the early 19th century which headed northwards down the road on the left. Both roads have been superseded by others, Church Lane was bypassed in the 19th century as coaches found the gradient too steep up Clayton Hill with that route now the A273. Old London Road remained in use as the A23 until the early 1990s when it was replaced by a new interchange with the new route now beyond the hedge to the left though it remains part of the A273 for traffic wishing to join the northbound carriageway of the A23, however, very few people use this except the locals. The inn itself has become more of a gastropub than local over the last few years and remains popular with both visitors and walkers. |
