Description
English: The Point of Peveril Point This image shows the very tip of Peveril Point, the headland at the southern end of Swanage Bay.

The rocky ledges of the point, which can be seen on the map and projecting from the sea in the photo, were the likely downfall of a Viking fleet in 877AD. The fleet of 120 ships was sailing from Wareham to Exeter when evidence suggests they were ship-wrecked on the ledges. However history also records that they were defeated in a sea battle by Alfred the Great, to whose victory there is a monument on Swanage sea-front near the Mowlem theatre in SZ0378, although this explanation is now thought unlikely.

I’m not sure of the origins of the concrete-built structure seen in the photograph. There are a number of wartime installations on Peveril Point, of which this could be one, but it seems rather lightweight and open-sided compared with other WWII defensive structures.
