Description
English: The Presbyterian Church in Geneva, 24 Park Place, Geneva, New York, February 2022. Although the genesis of the modern-day building dates to 1839, the bulk of what you see in this image was the product of an 1877 renovation which uses the modestly-scaled Greek Revival original as a core around which is constructed a massive, majestic Gothic-styled expansion. The prominent corner tower seen in the foreground is an example of the stout proportions and heavy massing that are rather unusual for the style: it's divided vertically into stages, separated as elsewhere on the façade by belt courses of lightly colored stone that rake over the pointed-arched windows and provide a visual contrast with the red brick elsewhere on the exterior, while the tapered third stage is instead faced in slate shingles and features an unusual window in a trefoil pattern. The steeple of the tower, originally taller, was replaced in the 1940s with a simple tent roof. Elsewhere on the façade, note the triple-portal entrance with its graceful Gothic arches and the stylized Corinthian columns separating them, as well as the unusually small rose window with simple tracery in sunburst and quatrefoil patterns. Originally known as First Presbyterian Church, its congregation was founded in 1798, worshiping in the village schoolhouse for thirteen years before the construction of its first building (financed in part by the former U.S. Senator, current Mayor of New York City, and future Governor of New York and Erie Canal proponent, DeWitt Clinton). The current church replaced it on the same site. The congregation took on its current name in 1988 after merging with the former North Presbyterian Church at the corner of Genesee and Lewis Streets (their building is now home to Faith Community Church).
