Description

At the upper centre is the chimney of Longannet Power station (now demolished). It had a generating capacity of 2,400 megawatts, which was the highest of any power station in Scotland. It was coal-fired, but also was capable of co-firing biomass, natural gas and sludge. However it was a substantial polluter and environmental concerns led to its closure in 2016 after 43 years of operation.

Opposite the old power station, on the other bank of the river, is the large Grangemouth petrochemical plant and oil refinery - one of six such refineries in Britain. We only see part of it here, due to clouds.

Apart from those two industrial centres the "Central belt" area of the country is substantially given over to agricultural use. At lower right is the town of Linlithgow, an ancient town and the birthplace of King James V and Mary, Queen of Scots.

The River Forth is 29 miles long and meets the North Sea at Edinburgh (off to the right of the picture).
