Description
English: The Sign for Beckets Thomas a Becket (1117-70) was Arch-bishop of Canterbury when he was murdered in his own cathedral by supporters of Henry II. The king and Becket had been opposed on a number of issues, but it is not clear whether Henry ordered the murder. In 1174 he id penance at what was now the tomb of St Thomas a Beck, the Church having recognised him as a martyr. His shrine attracted countless pilgrims thereafter, including those in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
