The pay is in excess of $2 per day, and even themen on the extra list, by reason of the arrangement of schedulesadopted, are able to make a good living wage, and for the majorityof the extra runs the pay is the same as that of the regular men.The company has the welfare of its men sincerely at heart, believ-ing that aside from philanthropic considerations, the interests ofthe company and its employees are identical, and the managementis constantly working toward the end of creating a spirit of har-mony and mutual good will between the corporation and its em-ployees. In view of this attitude, it is interesting to contrast the conditionof the men at the present time and the situation as it was in thehorse-car days. Of a total of 91 2 men, fifty worked 1 2hours or less than 1 3, fifty worked 1 3 hours or less than 14, 155worked 1 4 hours or less than 15, 372 worked fifteen hours or lessthan 1 6, 235 worked 1 6 hours or less than 1 7, and fifteen worked1 7 hours or less than 1 8. Although these hours seem excessive,the days work was no longer than in neighboring cities, as at thesame time the average time of the drivers in Pittsburg was 1 5hours, 41 minutes and 24 seconds. On the whole, the conductorsworked slightly longer than the drivers in both cities, but the stablemen a somewhat shorter time. To-day the average pay in Phila-delphia is 20 cents an hour for both conductors and motormenand the day is 1 0 hours.
