English: The Strid - Bolton Abbey This is just one of the strids in Yorkshire but is by far the most spectacular.The story goes that the boy of Egremont out hunting with his dog chasing the White Doe of Rylstone tried to jump the Strid, fell in and was drowned. As a memorial to him Lady Alice de Romille bequeathed the land on which the Priory now stands to the Prior and canons of Embsay. Many people have tried to jump The Strid over the years, almost all with fatal results. |
