emarginate, crescentic. Caudal peduncle 3 times as long as deep. Scales 2 27 strongly denticulate, 38 — ; lat. 1. —. Brown, darker on the snout and vertex ;& y J 11 20 a blackish opercular spot; fins greyish. Total length, 95 millim. Described from a single specimen from Msambu. 81. Eretmodus cyanostictus.—Blegr. 1898. (Fig. p. 187. Upper.) Eight or 10 transverse series of teeth in each jaw, the crowns reddish brown.Depth of body equal to length of head, 3 times in total length. Profile of snoutcurved ; length of snout \h to twice diameter of eye, which is 4^ to 5 times in lengthof head, and a little less than interorbital width; mouth extending to belownostril; cheeks and opercles naked. Gill-rakers short, 9 or 10 on lower part ofanterior arch. Dorsal XXIII.-XXV. 3-5 ; spines sub-equal from the sixth, i\ lengthof head, a little shorter than soft rays Pectoral f length of head. Blackish brown, with scattered pale blue dots ; J JJ 11—12 6—9 belly yellowish. Total length, 75 millim. Described from five specimens from Mbity Rocks and three from Kinyamkolo. The toothed portions of the prcemaxillary and mandible are much developed indepth, in a manner suggestive of the Sparida and Scaridm, and the teeth areimplanted in sockets. The deep triangular groove for the reception of the prse-maxillaries extends to between the orbits, and the occipital crest is prolonged to it;the parietal crests are produced on the frontals ; the pmeorbital is large, and thechain of suborbitals very slender. The pharyngeal teeth have long, slender shaftsand conical brown cusps. The ribs are attached to the back of short transverseprocesses ; all but the last one support epipleurals; the last four prcecaudal vertebraehave a hcemal b
