Description

The placard at the Victoria and Albert Museum reads:

Byzantine Empire, Constantinople (Turkey, Istanbul) About 950-1000 Museum no. 216-1865 Wood overlaid with ivory and bone; traces of paint and gilding

The Byzantine capital of Constantinople was a centre for the production of boxes of this type, made of ivory and bone. This one, which eventually found its way to the cathedral of Veroli in central Italy, is the finest surviving example. It is possibly a marriage casket, and the scenes represent pagan gods and goddesses.
