aphedCape York Peninsula, Australia An expedition of eight bird photo-graphers and naturalists to IronRange on the Cape York Peninsulahas succeeded in photographing oneof Australias rarely seen birds — theMarbled Frogmouth. The bird has been seen by fewpeople during the past 50 years andnoted ornithologist Mr. ArnoldMcGill has described it as practicallyunknown. Twelve other elusive species werealso photographed by members of thehighly successful expedition to thisunique monsoon rainforest area ofAustralia. The expedition was sponsored bythe Bank of New South Wales andmounted by the National Photo-graphic Index of Austrahan Birds. The Wales supports the Indexthrough a special grants scheme of$20,000 spread over four years. The Index is based at The Austra-lian Museum, Sydney, and is a uniqueconcept. A replica of the Index isheld in the National Library, Can-berra. When completed it will be theonly systematic photographic Index ofa countrys birdhfe established any-where in the world.

254 Vich Nat. Vol. 92 750 Species Of the approximately 750 birdspecies in Australia, the Index hashigh quality photographs of all but100. Among the 20 or so species photo-graphed on the expedition 13, includ-ing the Marbled Frogmouth, are newto the Index. The most significantachievement for the expedition was tosuccessfully photograph 10 of the 23species endemic to the Cape YorkPeninsula. The expedition comprised Mr.Donald Trounson, executive officer ofthe Index, Sydney, Mr. Laurence LeGuay, Sydney, Mr. Chris Cameron ofChinchilla, Qld., Mr. Eric Zillman ofGin Gin, Qld., Mr. Kerry Muller,curator of birds at Taronga Zoo, Syd-ney, Miss Molly Clampett, a memberof the Australasian office of the BBC,Sydney, Miss Lisa Halaby, a visitorfrom the U.S., and Mrs. Wilma Taitof Miles, Qld., who was cook for thegroup. Mr. Ray Howarth provided aliaison base in Cairns. Expedition leader, Mr. DonaldTrounson, said the Marbled Frog-mouth is exceedingly difficult to findin the gloom of the rainforest. It
