Summary
editDescriptionThe Weymouth Relief Road (1) - geograph.org.uk - 1078157.jpg |
English: The Weymouth Relief Road (1) The construction of the Weymouth relief road has started. It will run from the A354 just north of the Ridgeway to the Manor Roundabout towards the southern end of the Dorchester road near Lodmoor. It will act as a bypass for Broadwey and Upwey which experience long delays of traffic on the A354, the main route from Dorchester to Weymouth. Traffic is especially bad in the summer.
It has been very controversial as it passes through some sensitive AOB's (area of outstanding beauty) SSSI's (site of special scientific interest), some interesting woodland and close to nature reserves. It starts at the southern end from the marshy area around Loodmoor which was for many years use as landfill, climbs steadily alongside the Weymouth-Dorchester railway track across agricultural land on Oxford clay to Littlemoor where one branch goes north to the Ridgeway and the other east along the Littlemoor Rd to Preston. The route north takes it into the chalk escarpment near Bincombe at West Farm where it crosses the Bincombe railway tunnel, crosses the Ridgeway and starts to descend towards Dorchester joining the line of the A354 which is aligned along an old Roman road. This is the view of the northern end looking NW across from the Ridgeway towards where the new road will leave the A354 and head towards the point of view. The fence posts mark the northern limit of the construction area. The embankment at the left is where the Broadmayn road leave the A354 just north of the Ridgeway. The foreground is in SY6785 but the A354 in the background is in SY6786. |
