Summary
editDescriptionThe Wogan, Pembroke castle - geograph.org.uk - 1227855.jpg |
English: The Wogan, Pembroke castle A huge natural cavern beneath the castle: it was probably used prehistorically and by the Romans, before the Normans partially walled up the opening and added a stone staircase which leads into the castle above. The opening, right, is directly on to the river bank so it is thought that that area could have been used as a boat shed or to receive supplies delivered by water. The word 'wogan' is likely to derive from the Welsh 'ogof', cave. |
