d who were all ex-ceedingly fond of poetry and music, conceived the idea ofreviving the old custom of declamatory chawnting which pre-vailed with the Greeks. Their first step was to get the poetRimeccini to compose a drama, called The History of Daphne^for which music was arranged by Pesi, the most celebratedcomposer of that period. Count Corsi, simply an amateur, was at the same time a very good musician, and assisted inthe production. This piece, when complete, as well as TheMask of Comus, was represented in private at the Palace ofthe Count. The actors and singers were the author and hisfriends, and the orchestra of the first Italian opera consistedonly of four instruments, namely, a pianoforte, a harp, a vio-loncello, and a lute. There were no airs in this opera, andthe recitative, if such it could be called, was nothing morethan a species of measured intonation, which would at thepresent time be thought very monotonous and fatiguing.
