Summary edit
DescriptionThe Wren's Nest Ripple Beds, Dudley - geograph.org.uk - 637377.jpg |
English: The Wren's Nest Ripple Beds, Dudley This is the fossilised record of a 420 million year old shallow seabed (or beach) formed by wave action during the Silurian period. The same rippling patterns can be seen beneath shallow water by any sandy beach today. The height is about 18 metres and the strata lean at almost 50 degrees.
Our tectonic land mass was formerly situated just south of the equator, and the horizontal sediments hardened while moving northwards. They were also raised during two separate periods of mountain building 400 and 330 million years ago, buckling and folding the rocks to create Wren's nest Hill and place these ripple beds to their present position. To prevent unnecessary damage the slabs are now fenced off, but a good viewing position is provided. It is part of Britain's first Geological Nature Reserve, created in 1956. Mining and quarrying ceased in the 1920s after several centuries. |
