Summary edit

Description
English: The abbey church at Waltham Abbey The abbey was founded in 1030 as a collegiate church of secular cannons and then re-founded as an abbey of Augustinian Canons in 1177. At that time the abbey was very large, together with the present Norman nave, it had a crossing tower, north and south transepts, a choir that was longer than the nave and all the monastic buildings that normally surround a cloister, which stood to the north of this church. The present Norman nave and a few 14th century additions is the only part of the church to survive the Dissolution of 1556-8. The present west tower was added after the Dissolution when the church came into parochial use. The church interior is much more interesting than the exterior and is a delight to see.
