English: The church of St Remigius. The population of Dunston was almost wiped out by the Black Death in 1348/9 and it is believed that the church became ruinous at that time. St Remiguis' church > 1351405 is located in Commonclose Plantation, on the edge of the golf course which adjoins Dunston Hall Hotel (formerly Dunston Hall), and can be reached via a wooded track > 1351390 which turns off Stow Lane. The building was restored in Victorian times > 1351439 - 1351489 but retains a C15 rood screen, the lower panels of which are lost but the upper tracery with carved figures in the corners is original > 1351441 - 1351449. Some of the windows contain medieval stained glass > 1351466 - 1351473 - 1351480. There is a 17th century brass. The chancel pews are of Tudor origin, as is the font, > 1351499. The pews in the nave are Victorian. The Alabaster decoration inside the east window > 1351458 is recent, the German organ > 1351454 was given to the church in 1921. More than 20 yew trees are growing in the churchyard and over fifty species of wild flowers have been recorded to grow here. A public footpath traverses the churchyard and the church is often open - a key is available from nearby in case the door is locked.
