Description
English: The dark side of Raikes' Mausoleum, north-east of Welton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Robert Raikes (1765-1837) was a Hull banker who lived at Welton Hall. He built the mausoleum for himself and his family in 1818. Under the mausoleum (well below ground level) is a passageway that leads to a large vault. It contains 7 lead coffins, 4 adult shells and 2 baby shells.

In a few more weeks and the bluebells around it will be in flower.
The front of the building is seen in SE9629 : Raikes Mausoleum. The main doorway seen in that photo has been bricked up for some time. I have included this photo (of the west side) because of the story I am about to tell.
The reputation of Raikes' Mausoleum goes before it, and may be considered a moral tale should you be considering, in your vanity, the idea of making a memorial to yourself.
The story was told by someone who knows it since childhood, and goes like this:
There must have been an opening at the time, since this man's wife and friend went a-visiting. Inside were skeletons in coffins, for all to see. As they peered in the eerie semi-darkness at one set of bones, to the alarm and consternation of the visitors, something crawled out from inside the ribcage. It was a toad!
Apparently, the story continues, Raikes' skull used to spend more time at the local Police Station than in it resting place, having been removed as a prank by local children.
