nner. The object of thiscontrivance is, the eradication ofweeds, and the clearing of plough-ed lands for seed ; in whichrespect it is said to be more ser-viceable than any other instru-ment. Before the extirpator isemployed, the soil ought to be onceploughed ; and, if it have lain fal-low during a summer, the scalp ispassed over it twice ; namely, thefirst time about two inches deep,and the next, in a transverse direc-tion, at the depth of about fourinches. This operation, togetherwith harrowing the ground once,will not only destroy all weeds,but will pulverize and prepare thesoil for the reception of seed,whether drilled, or broad-cast.Farther, if lands, intended for theproduction of spring-crops, beploughed in autumn, and the ex-tirpator be afterwards passed overthem, they will be rendered fit forimmediate sowing...This machinemay be drawn either by two or bythree horses, according to thenature of the soil, and the depthrequired : it possesses the pecu-liar advantage, that it may be
