BALANCE, one of the sixsimple powers in mechanics, prin-cipally used for determining theequality or difference of weights insuch bodies as are liable to thiscomputation. There are two kinds of weightsprincipally used at present ; the an-cient, or the Roman steel-yard,and the modern, which consists ofa lever or beam suspended exactlyin the middle, having scales or ba-sons attached to each extremity. Ifthe anus of the balance be of equallength, and similar weights placedin the scale, the balance will con-sequently be in eqvilibrio. Butif one of the arms be in lengthto the other as ten to nine,the balance may still be so con-structed, that both the arms withtheir scales shall equiponderate.
