This fact was indicated by the rec-ords of many delicate meteorological instruments ofthe astronomical stations in America, Europe andIndia. A cone of Krakatoa, three thousand feet high, wassplit in two, leaving a precipice jutting onto the ocean.At the same time the bed of the sea in the Straits ofSunda sank 900 feet at some points. A part of Kra-katoa Island sank 1,700 feet. The volcano was torninto fragments by the explosions and the missing por-tion (estimated at 200 billion cubic feet) disappeared.Whether it was blown off into space in the form ofcosmic dust, or sank into the bowels of the earth isstill a mystery. Simultaneously with the explosions of the 26th and27th, enormous tidal waves wrere raised, ranging, asestimated, from 50 to 135 feet high.
