Title |
The hungry mob of scribblers and etchers |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Satire on Lord Bute's attempts to enlist satirists on his side: Bute descends a staircase tossing coins down to a crowd of writers and printmakers including William Austin holding a scroll lettered "Etching in Genl by W A", William Hogarth holding a large burin under his arm, Matthew Darly holding an impression of "The Screen" (i.e., BM Satire 3825), Charles Churchill in clerical dress rasing his hat to Bute, and Samuel Johnson holding a scroll marked "300£ pr Ann"; Stephens identifies the man on the steps holding out his hat as the political writer, John Shebbeare. 1762

Notes |
Stephens suggests that the man wearing ragged clothes and holding a label that reads "Common Side" is intended to represent one of "the ruffians and bruisers whom Lord Bute hired to protect him on going to Guildhall, Nov. 9 1761". The print was used as no. 27 in "The Scots Scourge", II, where it is explained as follows: "When his L-p from Nothing was call'd into Power,/Conscious Wits wou'd be squirting, and Writers wou'd lour;/He got this a pension: and gave that a bribe./But his fortune can't silence the ill-natur'd Tribe." Doring attributed the print to Paul Sandby, but this is uncertain. |

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
