In the western parts of Russia, the snow-layers are also less regular and disap-pear more quickly, but this is owing to higher winter temperatures. Snowless wintersare generally warm, and conversely. The duration of the winter period in. Russia is of great importance, as duringthis season agriculture is impossible, and a large part of the rural population mustremain idle. In the following table under letter a the number of days during theyear having a mean temperature above zero (32 F.) is given, and under letter b,those with a mean temperature above 6° C. (42-8° F.).
