ly the Ponte della pietra, the construction is of marble; and in the old plan of Lobia itbears the title of Pons Marmoreiis ; and it would seem that thisappellation was given to it, not on account of its masonry, butbecause it was ornamented with a marble colonnade, clearlyshown in the plan of Lobia, and which was probably that builtby Theodoric, for communication with his palace. Liutprand(ii, 1) calls it a marble bridge of wonderful workmanship, andprodigious magnitude. The bridge was broken in 1512, andrestored by Fra Giocondo in 1521.:(: Both bridges were orna-mented with beautiful bas-reliefs.§ The southern bridge wascalled Militare and Rotto, though the more general name wasthe Pons _^Emilius, from its being in a line with the Stradadel Corso. The bridge was destroyed, in 1153,§ by an inundation of theAdige; but several writers concur in stating that vestiges ofthis bridge might be seen at either extremity, in their time.;;Maffei, as we have seen, testifies to the masses of ruin appear-ing in the water like so many.rocks.^ Some of these havesince been removed, in order to clear the bed of the river.**One author, even so late as 1830,-;j* affirms that some of thepiles might be perceived when the water is low, and that manystones were dug up fro
