Description Created in 1906 with the objective of facilitating teaching and research on the botanical resources of the Portuguese colonies, the Jardim Colonial (Colonial Garden), later became known as Jardim do Ultramar Garden of the Overseas Territories) and is now officially called the Jardim Botânico Tropical (Tropical Botanical Garden). It covers an area close to 16 acres (6.4 ha) and contains more than 400 tropical botanical species. In addition, it has a small collection of busts supposed to show the typical facial features of different colonial peoples in the "Overseas Territories".
