Ironworks and other industries now givesteady and remunerative employment to an increased population. The conditions ofmaterial well-being are everywhere to be seen. On hill -and in dale neat cottagesabound—the homes of thrifty, self-respecting, and God-fearing men and women, andthe country is dotted with sanctuaries and Sunday-schools—at once the sign, cause, andeffect of the improvement the century has witnessed. No wonder that one of ourselves-should have broken out into a jingle :— Upon the mossy browOf the venerable MowThere stands a chapel now,Upon a hill.
