Over millennia every culture has developed its own ways to capture and pass its knowledge to the next generation. However, due to existing quotation rules a lot of African knowledge is lost. This is the knowledge gap we see in the African continent. Since Wikipedia should represent the sum of all human knowledge, we see it as a tool that should be inclusive of all knowledge including how it is recorded and expressed in spoken word or art form of its knowledge bearer. We will be presenting a few examples of how different African cultures captures knowledge, stores and share it - including an oral citations project we ran in Namibia - we will then propose how we think this can be incorporated to form part of Wikipedia and its sister projects. |
