Description

After my day shift as a wiper in the roundhouse at age 16 (my first adult job although just for the summer) I got to go out as a fireman on 3409, a coal-burning Consolidation class hand-bomber in yard service but only for a few hours. After that we went back and traded it for one of the new diesel switchers (6710, 6711 or 6712) which made my job a lot cleaner and infinitely easier but hardly as fondly remembered. I guess at the time I knew the procedure for injecting water into the boiler as I was left in charge when the hogger and switch crew walked over to Whyte Avenue for supper from the South Edmonton station. Faiure to keep enough water in the boiler risked an explosion. Today it would have to be by trial and error.

My father, a CPR trainman, had somehow become aware of my extra shift and surprised me with a bag lunch from home, a few miles away.

Behind 3409 is a 1200 Pacific class, one of the latest of CPR steam engines, a number of which ended up in private hands in the USA pulling excursion trains and probably still do. There were quite a few of them running out of Edmonton at this time. They were also coal burners but equipped with mechanical stokers if I remember correctly.
