Summary
editDescriptionThe remains of Littledean Tower - geograph.org.uk - 739341.jpg |
English: The remains of Littledean Tower This ruined tower near Ploughlands Farm, Maxton, was formerly the 16th century residence of the Kers of Littledean, and it stands on a prominent position overlooking the River Tweed. The oldest part is probably the "stone house" that escaped destruction when the hall and stables of Littledean were burnt by the English in 1544. An earlier rectangular block of three main storeys was extended in the form of a D-plan tower wrapped around the west end of the early house, in the late 16th century. The tower walls are 1.8m thick and contain a formidable array of gunloops. The tower was lived in until the middle of the 18th century, but was ruinous by 1772.
