editDescriptionThe remains of Shoreditch station, East London line - geograph.org.uk - 643094.jpg |
English: The remains of Shoreditch station, East London line Although it was always one of London's most obscure and least-known stations, this station, which is one of three that have borne the name 'Shoreditch', existed for some 130 years. It was opened on 10 April 1876, and closed in June 2006, by which time it was the northern terminus of London Transport's East London Line.
The other two Shoreditch stations which have existed were: (1) The original terminal station of the Eastern Counties (later Great Eastern) railway. This opened in 1840 on Shoreditch High Street. It was later renamed Bishopsgate, but was always unpopular because of the unsalubrious neighbourhood in which it was situated. It became a goods station only in 1874 when the new Liverpool Street station of the Great Eastern Railway came into use. In the 1960s it was demolished. (2) The North London Railway had a station named Shoreditch which was opened in 1865 on the north side of Old Street. It was served by local trains out of Broad Street, but closed in 1941 and subsequently demolished. |
