Summary edit

Description
English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 16 June, shows Mt. Everest in the Himalayas Mountains. Mt. Everest, despite being the highest mountain on earth, is not spared from the impact of climate change. The Khumbu Glacier, located along the western flank of the mountain, is undergoing rapid retreat due to rising global temperatures. The retreat is so pronounced that the Everest Base Camp, located on its edge, will soon be moved to a lower latitude. Snow cover and glaciers are an important driver of many climatic processes worldwide: both snow and glaciers can be monitored and mapped using the Copernicus Sentinel satellites.
