The rich man and Lazarus

Oil on panel

75,5 x 107,4 cm; 29¾ by 42¼ in.

This composition, by the Flemish painter Caspar Van den Hoecke (active 1585-1648) in the seventeenth century, depicts the biblical story of Lazarus and the rich man.

Caspar van den Hoecke was a Flemish painter mainly active in Antwerp. He trained in the workshop of his father, Joris van den Hoecke, painter and engraver, and became a member of the Guild of St Luke in 1603. Although his artistic career was relatively short, his work had an important impact on Flemish art of the seventeenth century.

This composition illustrates the parallel lives of the rich man and Lazarus. We see the rich man surrounded by guests feasting at a generously laden table, while Lazarus, afflicted with sores, is at his door, hoping for some leftovers from the feast. However, once they are in the other world, the rich man begs Lazarus to alleviate his suffering with a little water. Abraham reminds him that in lifetime he had enjoyed great comforts, while Lazarus had endured terrible suffering. This parable points out the eternal consequences of our actions in the hereafter and underlines the importance of charity and compassion towards the most destitute.

This work highlights the artist’s technical skills. The scene is brought to life by the variety of colours, the play of textures in the textiles, dishes and metal elements, the marked contrasts and the effects of light.

Other versions of this painting exist, one of which was put up for sale in Paris in 2005. It is now listed in the database of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (No 116557).

Lazare et le mauvais riche

Huile sur panneau

75,5 x 107,4 cm ; 29¾ by 42¼ in.
