n imposing front of the Roman-Corinthian order, sur-mounted by a frieze bearing the inscription, Ad niajorum Deigloriam. Church of the Assumption, north side of Spring Garden Street,near Twelfth, is a brown-stone Gothic structure with two spires, eachone hundred and sixty feet in height. Saint Augustines. A plain brick structure, on the west side ofFourth Street, below Vine, having a steeple one hundred and eighty-eight feet in height. The original church building was destroyed byfire during the Native American riots in 1844. Saint John the Evangelists, on Thirteenth Street, above Chest-nut. A rough-cast brick building in the Gothic style, with towers in front.The structure is large, and the interior is decorated with fine paintings. Saint Marys, on Fourth Street, above Spruce. A plain spaciousbrick structure, erected in 1763, being the second Roman Catholicchurch erected in the city. It was for many years the Cathedralchurch. CATHEDRAL OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL. D 50 CITY HALL. Streets, south of Walnut Street. A plain brick structure, on the site ofthe first Roman Catholic church erected in Pennsylvania. The origi-nal church was erected about the year 1732. Saint Peters, at Fifth Street and Girard Avenue. A large brickrough-cast structure of the Roman-Corinthian style, with a spire twohundred and thirty-five feet in height. The main apartment of thechurch will accommodate two thousand people, besides which there area chapel and Sunday-school rooms, and adjoining parish schools andmonastic buildings. The church belongs to the order of Redemp-tion ists. UNITARIAN. First Unitarian, at Tenth and Locust Streets, below Walnut. Abrick rough-cast structure, with a handsome marble front and a porticoin the Grecian-Doric style. The celebrated Dr. Priestley was thefounder of this society, near the beginning of the present century, andfor more than fifty years the Rev. William H. Furness, D.D., waspastor. UNIVERSALIST
