The car is heated by the New Columbiaself-feeding car stove, made by the McGuire .ManufacturingCompany. Both the cars are mounted on wooden trucks, designed by C.E. Moore, master mechanic. These trucks have been tested bytwo years of service and have proved very satisfactory in easylidiug qualities, low cost of construction and maintenance. In the illustration a Providence fender, made by the Consoli-dated Car Fender Company, of Providence, is shown on themotor car. The cradle of the fender is hinged on trunnions atthe front of the platform so that it can lie turned up againstthe dash or let down at any desired angle, this being regulatedby a steel bar projecting under the platform and held by atrigger which, when the motorman presses it with his foot, letsthe cradle drop to the track. If short hauls were the rule this arrangement wouldbe inconvenient, but during the rush hours in the morning thepassengers ride several miles from the residence districts andleave the cars only at a few crossings in the business center-,in the evening it is the reverse. By this arrangement one con-ductor can have charge of both cars. In the monitor the ventilators have been arranged as on the elevated cars. Each littlewindow is hung on a pivot and all along one side are controlledby a sliding rod. In this way the smoke in the upper part ofthe car can be drawn out without causing a draught in the caritself. Electric heaters are placed under the seats.
