Summary
editDescriptionThe towers of the Clifton Suspension Bridge.jpg |
English: Clifton Suspension Bridge is based on a design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1831. Despite the main contractor going bankrupt, the two towers were constructed between 1836 and 1843, when the money ran out.
Brunel died in 1859. His colleagues in the Institution of Civil Engineers felt that completion of the bridge would be a fitting memorial and raised new funds. The bridge was eventually completed, in a strengthened version of Brunel's original design, in 1864. The Leigh Woods tower has a more pointed arch than the Clifton tower and bears the Latin inscription "Suspensa vix via fit" (a suspended road made with difficulty).
