n the fingers the actresswears inordinately long nail-preservers,which are considered as indicating that thenails beneath are of a proportionate length. The actors in the kings theatre are all hisown women, of whom he has some six orseven hundred, together with an average offive attendants to each woman. No male isallowed to enter this department of thepalace, which is presided over by ladieschosen from the noblest families in theland. These plays are all in dumb show,accompanied by music, which in Siam is ofa much sweeter character than is usual inthat part of the world. Besides the chiefactors, at least a hundred attendants assistin the play, all being magnificently attired.The play is continued ad infinitum. Whenany of the spectators become wearied, theyretire for a while, and then return, and it isthought a compliment to the principal guestto ask him the hour at which he would likethe play to be stopped. (14C9) HONORS TO THE WHITE ELEPHANT. 1471 King brought for the inspection of Sir J.Bowring the crown used at his coronation.It is very heavy, weighing about fourpounds, and is of enormous value, beingcovered with valuable diamonds, that whichterminates the peak being of very greatsize and splendor. The King also exhibitedthe sword of state, with its golden scabbardcovered with jewels. When the sword isdrawn, it is seen to be double, one blade be-ing inserted into the other, as into a secondsheath. The inner blade is of steel, and theouter of a softer metal. The handle is ofwood, and, like the sheath, is profuselyadorned with jewels.
