Description
English: View inside the wheelwright's oven on the Green, East Walton, Norfolk.

A plaque on the wall states that a fire in this building was used to heat the iron tyres of farm tumbrils and wagons. It was in use until about 1940. The wheel to be fitted was clamped to a nearby iron disc on the ground, and when the tyre was red-hot, it was transferred to the wheel by means of the special tools displayed inside. Buckets of cold water (from a well on the same green) were then thrown over it, and as it contracted, a tight fit was obtained. The oven could hold up to six tyres at a time – three large and three small. The work was directed by the village blacksmith whose former forge is at the end of the nearest row of cottages.

The building was preserved as part of East Walton's programme for the Silver Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Ivy had completely covered the building and had dislodged the bricks in the vaulted roof. Restoration was finished in April 1977. Further repairs were carried out in 1990 by the West Acre Estate in association with the Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk.
