After retirement from the State Department, Kathryn and Walter returned to Seattle.

Thelma R. Rydeen (1905-2005) was born in Candle, Alaska to Almer Rydeen (1878-1964), gold miner and member of Alaska Territorial Legislature. Thelma's mother died before 1910, and she was raised on Mercer Island by her uncle and aunt. She attended Garfield High School, became a nurse, and married Boris V. Glazounow (1904-1992) in 1931.
